What’s REALLY Going On in Green Lantern Right Now?

Ok so I have been thinking a lot about the current run of Green Lantern, written by Geoffrey Thorne, and I’m having a lot of fun trying to figure out where this story might be going.   So what I want to do today is share my thought process with you, and just have fun talking through my theory of what’s really going on in Green Lantern right now.   As of this recording, issue four still hasn’t come out, so maybe everything I’m about to say will end up being wrong, I don’t know, but right now it makes sense to me, so let’s have fun and start at the beginning. One of the first things everyone learned about the Geoffrey Thorne run was that the Central Battery was going to be destroyed, and that concept didn’t sit right with a lot of people…some because they’re not as interested in super heroes who don’t have their powers anymore, and some because it feels like a retread of a story we’ve seen several times before.  It wasn’t all that long ago that we lost the Central B...

DC Infinite Frontier Part 1: Return of the Black Lantern

Ok, it’s time to start digging in to DC’s summer event Infinite Frontier, written by Joshua Williamson with art by Xermanico.   I’m going to be focusing mainly on the Lantern stuff, and anything that clearly feeds into the themes of the story.   There are plot lines and characters introduced in issue one that I won’t be talking about yet because they literally didn’t do anything but just show up, so I’ll address them as the story progresses and there’s actually something to say about them.   So if you’re watching this video and you haven’t read the issue yet, there will be spoilers, but there’ll still be plenty of moments and plot lines for you to discover for yourself. So first, how’d we get here?  The short version is that the end of Dark Nights: Death Metal brought back everything that was ever taken away by a Crisis event.  Every alternate universe, every piece of history…everything that ever was cannon counts again, and the characters remember all o...

Green Lantern’s Kids: The History of Jade and Obsidian

So if solicitations are anything to go by, it looks like Jade and Obsidian are going to play a large role in DC’s next big event Infinite Frontier.   And it’s been a long time since these two characters have been in the spotlight, so who are they?   The easy answer is they’re the kids of Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern…and beyond that, people generally know that Jade has powers like a Green Lantern and dated Kyle Rayner for a while, and that Obsidian has shadow powers and is gay.   But that’s usually where people’s knowledge about these characters stops.   And since everything in DC history is fair game again in a post-Death Metal world, knowing the histories of these characters may make their return to prominence in Infinite Frontier carry more weight. So what I’m going to do today is give you an abridged rundown of the lives of Jade and Obsidian, and hopefully make you interested in seeing what’s next for them as new stories begin to be told.  A...

The DC Pride of Alan Scott

DC’s New 52 reboot in 2011 was an opportunity to reimagine their characters for a new audience.   In the case of the Justice Society, who had always been an older generation of heroes dating back to World War II, their New 52 versions were young and modern, with origins set firmly in the present day.   Out of all of them, the biggest change came to Green Lantern Alan Scott, who not only saw a drastic overhaul to his costume and the very nature of his powers, but was also positioned by DC editorial to be a major new gay character.   I already have a video where I dive deep into everything about all of this, and I’ll link to it at the end, but suffice to say that reimagining Alan Scott as gay didn’t go very well, and all evidence seems to point to members of DC editorial just wanting to cash in on the rising popularity of gay representation in mainstream American comics, as other publishers like Archie and Marvel had been getting a lot of good press over the weddings...

Green Lantern the Movie: 10 Years Later

At the time I'm writing this, it has been exactly ten years since the Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern movie hit theaters.  And I don’t know about you, but I can’t believe it’s been a decade since this thing came out…and I have to think part of that comes from the fact that we never really stopped talking about it.  And in a way I can see why…if things had worked out, this was going to launch a DC Cinematic Universe just like Iron Man did for Marvel.  The fact that those plans crashed and burned pretty much cemented Green Lantern’s place in super hero movie history, guaranteeing that it’ll be remembered as something more disappointing than just a bad movie.  And to this day, people are still waiting their turn to tell you all about why the movie failed.  You’d think everyone would have moved on by now, and the fact that they haven’t is partially Hollywood’s fault.  Every time there’s a comedic super hero movie, they take the opportunity to poke fun at Green Lant...

Green Lantern (2021) #3 Review

Hey everyone, we’re back with Green Lantern #3 written by Geoffrey Thorne, with art by Tom Raney and Marco Santucci, colors by Michael Atiyeh, and letters by Rob Leigh. And the good news is that John and his one thousand Quest Lanterns had enough time to get through the barrier and build a Sector House before the Central Battery exploded and cut power to all of their rings.  The bad news is that, as far as we know, the only two Lanterns in the Sector House when that happened were Saalak and G’nort.  John survived the vacuum of space because he happened to be paired off with a Green Lantern named Amanita, who did…something with spores I guess?  I don’t know how mushrooms work.  But John survives long enough to be found by a woman named Saqari, who lives on a quiet, out of the way world named Sergilon.  And right away, we get to the core theme of this chapter: the passage of time. John lost consciousness the moment Amanita moved in to save him, and by th...
